Tip #8 - Stop Procrastinating
Easier said than done, but it’s absolutely crucial. We all procrastinate from time-to-time for different reasons, but some are better than others at hiding it. One of the biggest draws for procrastination is using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Myspace, etc. Now, this may seem confusing since modern marketing channels are these same exact sources – it’s just up to you to plan out what you are using these sites for and to not stray. The sheer number of potential connections you can make through social media is staggering, but many photographers I know (including myself) spend countless hours making introductions and expanding their network. Where most artists fail, however, is turning these Internet friends into actual clients.
Remember that you are running a business. Don’t merely “Add a Friend” to your list, but try to get in front of this same connection face-to-face. They will remember you longer, hold a deeper connection to you/your brand, and be more likely to keep in touch with you in the future. Sure, it takes more time to speak with them in person, but it’s much more valuable.
You might seem busy over social media updates, but those who have the power to hire you for your next job see through the misleading posts after awhile – or they don’t see your posts at all because they are not spending much time on their social media sites (if at all).
You should also consider the importance of responding to each message/email/text/phone call immediately. Can they wait, or should you respond quickly? You might want to delay a response to take care of more important business.
